Congressman McGovern Announces $623,984 in Further E-Rate Funding for 3rd District Schools

U.S. Representative Jim McGovern (D-MA) announced today that three local school districts will receive a total of $623,984 in federal "E-Rate" funding:

Worcester Public Schools: $499,505
Attleboro Public Schools: $53,829
Marlborough Public Schools: $70,560

The E-rate also provides discounts ranging from 20% to 90% for public and private schools and public libraries on telecommunications service, internet access and internal connections.

The funding will be distributed through the Schools and Libraries Corporation (SLC), a non-profit corporation that administers the program under the direction of the Federal Communications Commission. The E-rate was established in the Telecommunications Act of 1996.

"This federal funding is great news for the citizens of Worcester, Attleboro and Marlborough," Rep. McGovern said. "We know our classrooms and libraries must be wired to the Internet for our children to have the skills to compete in the 21st Century. This must happen today if our children are to become the leaders of tomorrow. Over half of all jobs in the future will require computer and networking skills. Today's announcement brings us closer to achieving our goal."

Rep. McGovern has been a leader in the fight to maintain funding levels for the E-rate in Congress.
