Rep. Courtney Announces Nearly $2 Million in Grants for Windham, Groton-New London Airports

Congressman Joe Courtney announced today that the Windham Airport and Groton-New London Airport have received federal grants for safety and rehabilitation efforts totaling $1.865 million.

"I am pleased to announce these grant awards that will help to rehabilitate and improve the safety of our municipal airports," stated Congressman Joe Courtney. "I applaud the Connecticut Department of Transportation for its initiative in applying for these federal grants and look forward to advocating on its behalf in the future."

The Windham Airport will receive $1,150,000.00 for apron rehabilitation. The apron will be reconstructed to restore its original pavement strength. Also as part of this project, Taxiway B will be extended to serve as a full parallel to the crosswind runway 18-36.

The Groton-New London Airport will receive $715,350 to construct a runway safety area. Under this project, design efforts will be completed for the runway 5-23 safety area improvements. Design efforts will include utilization of Engineered Material Arresting System (EMAS). Necessary permits will also be obtained under this design phase.

Both grants are provided by the United States Department of Transportation (DOT), specifically the Federal Aviation Administration.

The funding for this grant program was appropriated by the new 110th Congress through the Continuing Resolution (CR) passed earlier this year. The previous Congress failed to complete the DOT budget; therefore, the current Congress completed it in January with a CR.
