Schiff Announces Appointments to U.S. Service Academies

Congressman Adam Schiff announced today that the following six students from the 29th Congressional District have been offered appointments to U.S. Service Academies:

* Christopher De La Torre, a Temple City resident who attends Temple City High School, was appointed to the Air Force Academy;
* Lucia Tonantzin Garcia, a Pasadena resident who attends John Marshall Fundamental Secondary School, was appointed to both the Naval Academy and the Merchant Marine Academy;
* Alexander Phillip Ruiz, a San Gabriel resident, who attends San Marino High School, was appointed to the Merchant Marine Academy;
* Foster MacLeod Hardt, a Pasadena resident who attends St. Francis High School, was appointed to the Merchant Marine Academy;
* John Michael Grace, a Pasadena resident who attends Polytechnic School; was appointed to the Naval Academy; and
* Ashley Heather McKenzie, a South Pasadena resident who attends South Pasadena High School, was appointed to the Naval Academy.

"I admire these students' commitment to serving and protecting our country at such a critical time in our nation's history," said Schiff. "Each one of these students has compiled an outstanding resume of accomplishments and demonstrated excellence in academics. I am extremely proud to have nominated these young men and women, and I am confident they will be among the future leaders of our country."

Congressman Schiff will meet with these students in the near future to congratulate them upon their appointment, thank them for their commitment to our country, and to learn about their goals and objectives.

Students interested in applying to a Service Academy in 2008, should call Congressman Schiff's District Office at 626-304-2727 or visit www.house.gov/Schiff to obtain an application form. The application deadline is November 16, 2007.

Congressman Schiff has introduced a "Kids First" agenda of initiatives to improve education, safety, and health care for our children. He is the co-founder of the Democratic Study Group on National Security and a member of both the House Appropriation and Judiciary Committees. He represents California's 29th Congressional District, which includes the communities of Alhambra, Altadena, Burbank, East Pasadena, East San Gabriel, Glendale, Monterey Park, Pasadena, San Gabriel, South Pasadena and Temple City.
