Chris Murphy Statement on President Bush's Veto of Troop and Veteran Funding Bill

Today, President Bush vetoed a bill that funds the nation's troops, veterans, and homeland security needs, while holding the President accountable for this war and the Iraqi people responsible for the future of their country. Congressman Chris Murphy (CT-5) released the following statement on the President's action:

"The President's choice to veto this legislation defies the will of the American people by continuing his open ended commitment to the civil war in Iraq. Congress passed a bill that gives the troops and veterans more than what the President requested, yet he continues to lead our troops down a road with no military solution.

"Four years to the day of the President declaring ‘mission accomplished' in Iraq, our soldiers are caught in a civil war with no end in sight, and this Administration is only exacerbating the problem by rejecting the notion of changing course in this war.

"When I met with President Bush almost two weeks ago, I told him that the results of the 2006 election had to mean something, and if he wasn't willing to sign a bill with a plan to bring our troops home, then it makes it very hard to understand where the American people fit in. This veto action clearly defies the sentiment of the American public. Congress will continue to pressure the President to do what is best for the country - to bring a significant number of troops home and hold the Iraqis responsible for their own future."
