HOUSE ARMED SERVICES COMMITTEE AUTHORIZES $588 MILLION FOR ADVANCED PROCUREMENT OF ADDITIONAL VIRGINIA-CLASS SUBMARINE

Congressman Joe Courtney announced today that the House Armed Services Committee, of which Courtney is a member, passed its Fiscal Year 2008 National Defense Authorization spending bill late last night and includes $588 million of new money for the advanced procurement of long lead items necessary to increasing production of the Virginia-class submarine to two per year. The authorization bill is expected to be considered by the House of Representatives next week.

"I am pleased that the House Armed Services Committee shares my concern that our nation's Virginia - class submarine program must be more robust to meet future global security threats," stated Congressman Courtney. "While this first major hurdle has been cleared, I will continue my effort to make the case in Congress that the Virginia-class submarine is an integral part of our national security as we move through the funding process."
