U.S. Rep. Diana DeGette Introduces Legislation to Enhance Safety of the Food Supply

Following recent outbreaks of food-related illnesses, Chief Deputy Whip Diana DeGette (D-CO) introduced legislation this week with Rep. Rosa DeLauro (D-CT), to strengthen human and pet food safety standards and provide the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) with mandatory recall authority of tainted food products. Currently, under federal law, recalls following outbreaks are voluntary.

"The government has mandatory recall authority for vehicles, toys, and a whole host of other consumer products." said Rep. DeGette. "We should also have the authority to protect American families and recall food that is contaminated or is a health hazard."

The legislation would provide FDA with increased access to company records during tainted food investigations. In recent outbreaks, some companies have withheld critical information that would have assisted authorities. It further requires foreign food importers to meet safety standards at least equivalent to those of the United States, and give the federal government the ability to revoke certifications, visit foreign plants, and deny importation of products that fail to meet U.S. standards.

"Unfortunately, the most recent outbreaks show once again that we cannot rely on the food industry to voluntarily recall unsafe food." said Rep. DeGette. "In our international food market today, this legislation will help assure Americans their food is safe and steps are being taken to prevent further contamination."
