U.S. Rep. Diana DeGette Votes to Override Bush Veto of Iraq Accountability Act

Chief Deputy Whip Diana DeGette (D-CO) voted today to override President's veto of the U.S. Troop Readiness, Veterans' Health and Iraq Accountability Act. For the first time, the measure would have required accountability for the war in Iraq from both the Bush Administration and the Iraqi government. The bill received a majority of support 222-203, but not the two-thirds required to override a Presidential veto.

"Today, I was proud to vote once again in support of a plan that would take Iraq in a new direction. After four years of the President's failed strategy in Iraq, we must provide a responsible plan to get our troops home and require the Iraqi government to meet the President's own benchmarks for stability."

"The American people and the US Congress no longer support giving President Bush a blank check for the war in Iraq. The President must be held accountable for the American lives and resources which have already been sacrificed."
