Cornyn: Bush Veto Of Artificial Iraq Timetable Entirely Appropriate

U.S. Sen. John Cornyn, a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, made the following statement Tuesday following President Bush's veto of an emergency supplemental funding bill that included an artificial timeline for withdrawal from Iraq and billions of dollars in unrelated pork barrel spending:

"It's entirely appropriate that the President vetoed this bill that placed constraints on Gen. Petraeus and our commanders in Iraq. We can now get back to the serious business of providing our troops the critical funding they need and deserve, which has been obstructed for far too long.

"Our troops are waiting on an emergency funding bill to provide them with essential equipment and support, while Democrats are staging signing ceremonies and going through political kabuki theater just to demonstrate their disappointment with the President's strategy in Iraq. I think it's inappropriate and irresponsible. Debate is important and differences should be aired out, but not at the expense of our troops in harm's way serving our nation honorably.

"Our goal should be to pass a clean emergency bill and get the funds to the troops as quickly as we can. It's only right for us to provide the resources they need to do their job."
