Schumer Announces IRS To Extend Federal Tax Filing Deadline Additional Week

Today, U.S. Senator Charles E. Schumer announced that the IRS has granted an additional week long extension to the federal tax-filing deadline to taxpayers affected by the recent storm. IRS Commissioner Mark Everson granted the additional week federal extension after Schumer requested it at a Senate Finance Committee hearing this morning. Earlier this week, the IRS granted only a two-day extension for storm ravaged regions in New York and across the Northeast. On-going power outages and public transportation problems have made it difficult in some cases, if not impossible, for some taxpayers and tax professionals to meet the April 17 filing deadline. Affected taxpayers can mark their paper tax returns with the words "April 16 Storm." Taxpayers who e-file their returns can use their software's "disaster" feature, if available.

Senator Schumer released the following statement:

"This will relieve an enormous burden for taxpayers who are trying to recover from the devastating storms. One or two days are not nearly enough time for thousands of farmers, families, and local businesses to get control of this very difficult situation, much less pay their taxes. I want to thank Commissioner Everson for his responsiveness and attention to this issue."
