U.S. Representative John Boozman (R-AR) today voted against a Democrat-backed Iraq war supplemental which included an arbitrary timeline for withdrawal and over $20 billion in pork-barrel spending.
"We should have an honest and open debate about the funding of our troops, not one which is closed and laden with conditions," Boozman said. "People have demanded leadership from the Congress on this issue. Today wasn't about leadership - it was about politicking to grab a headline"
The bill passed the House by a 1-vote majority: 218-212, with one voting present and three not voting. President Bush has vowed to veto the legislation, should it make it out of the Senate.
"Our troops deserve a bill which can help them succeed, not one which hamstrings them. I can't see how setting an arbitrary deadline helps our troops realize that success," Boozman added.
