Congresswoman Rosa L. DeLauro (Conn.-3) issued the following statement on the Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) fiscal year 2007 operating plan. DeLauro chairs the House Appropriations Agriculture, FDA and related agencies Subcommittee.
"I look forward to closely examining the full details of the FDA's operating plan for fiscal year 2007.
"It is very gratifying that the FDA reversed course and chose to fully fund the Office of Women's Health at $4 million for fiscal year 2007. It took a great deal of pressure from a number of directions to successfully prevent the FDA from underfunding and dismantling the Office of Women's Health.
"It is disappointing that on the important issue of women's health FDA had to be persuaded to simply maintain the funding level that was requested by the administration and provided by Congress. Fortunately, those actions - the letter Congress sent to Dr. Von Eschenbach, raising the issue during the FDA budget hearing and the provision included in the Emergency Supplemental - paid off."
