Graves Teams with Skelton on Walter Reed Bill

U.S. Congressman Sam Graves signed on as a co-sponsor this week to H.R. 1538, The Wounded Warrior Assistance Act of 2007, authored by fellow Missouri Representative Ike Skelton. The bill addresses issues raised since the discovery of inadequate care for wounded soldiers at Walter Reed Hospital in Washington D.C.

"This is a good first step," said Graves. "I commend Chairman Skelton for working in a bi-partisan way to address these problems. The situation at Walter Reed is unacceptable and we must do better for our fighting men and women."

The bill provides the people, training, and oversight mechanisms needed to ensure that our soldiers always receive committed, quality care. The legislation also will help streamline the transfer of information from the Department of Defense to the Veterans Administration. It also provides for additional counseling services to families with a loved one who has been wounded.

"We have made a commitment to those who fight on our behalf, and it's a commitment that I intend to keep," said Graves. "We must do better and we will."

The bill has been passed out of the House Committee on Armed Services and awaits consideration by the full House.
