Boozman Calls Abortion Research Program

U.S. Representative John Boozman (R-AR) today reaffirmed his support for pro-life legislation by joining the call to pass the Post Abortion Research and Care Act.

H.R. 1457, offered by Rep. Joseph Pitts (R-PA), would provide $15 million to the National Institutes of Health to research the emotional impact of abortion on women. The legislation also creates a $1.5 million grant program to fund the development of treatment programs for women who suffer from post-abortion depression.

"A New Zealand study published this past year indicated that teenagers choosing an abortion display symptoms of depression," Boozman, a co-sponsor and member of the Bipartisan Congressional Pro-Life Caucus said. "This research deserves careful consideration and I strongly support giving NIH the tools to undertake this important study.

"Women deserve to know the long-term effects of abortion on their mental and emotional well-being," Boozman added.

Today's action follows last week's announcement that Boozman will co-sponsor the bipartisan Pregnant Women Support Act, offered by Rep. Lincoln Davis (D-TN), which would extend health insurance to pregnant women and their unborn children, among other things.
