Statement of Governor Warner on the 2003 Elections
RICHMONDGovernor Mark R. Warner tonight issued the following statement on the 2003 elections.
"In the first 22 months of our administration, we have worked to restore fiscal integrity to our Commonwealth and talked straight with Virginians about the challenges we face. I have avoided the 'have it all for nothing' soundbites and slogans that are easily spoken on the campaign trail, but not fit for governing.
"In the coming months, we face issues of enormous complexity and importance to our shared future. We must meet our state responsibility in preserving our education system - and in doing so, help relieve the burden on the local taxpayer. We must reform our tax system to make it more fair and equitable. We must reach agreement on another difficult budget. And we must continue to find the best transportation solutions we can afford.
"Tonight, I am pleased to see we have reversed an historic trend in Virginia, where Democrats have failed to gain seats for two decades. As a Democrat, I am proud that this year Democrats espoused a fiscally responsible, forward-looking, mainstream message. The trend of tonight, combined with the message of the spring Republican primaries tells me Virginians favor moderate leaders who can work together. We have much to accomplish in the coming months."
