Boozman Continues NATO Trip
U.S. Representative John Boozman (R-AR) today continued his meetings with the NATO Parliamentary Assembly (NATO PA) in Brussels, Belgium.
Boozman, a member of the NATO PA, is part of an American delegation representing Congress in discussions of NATO's political and military priorities after the summit in Riga last year, as well as energy security.
"NATO's efforts in Afghanistan and Kosovo are chief among our discussions this week," Boozman said. "In addition to military concerns, we had healthy discussions on energy, including ways to make NATO countries more secure by reducing our dependence on oil and taking a serious look at homegrown energy alternatives.
"Additionally, nuclear proliferation in countries such as Iran were discussed," said Boozman, a member of the House Foreign Affairs' Subcommittee on Terrorism, Nonproliferation, and Trade.
NATO PA members also met with Supreme Allied Commander Europe, Gen. John Craddock (USA), to discuss security concerns of the alliance and the European Union.
Three committees of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly - the Defense and Security Committee, the Political Committee and the Economics and Security Committee - gathered Sunday in Brussels for the meetings.
The NATO Parliamentary Assembly is the inter-parliamentary organization of legislators from the member countries of the North Atlantic Alliance as well as 13 associate members. The Assembly provides a critical forum for international parliamentary dialogue on an array of security, political and economic matters. Its principal objective is to foster mutual understanding among Alliance parliamentarians of the key security challenges facing the transatlantic partnership. Assembly discussions and debates make an important contribution to the development of the consensus that must underpin Alliance policies.
Boozman was first appointed to the NATO PA during the 108th Congress. In 2006, at the NATO PA session in Quebec, Boozman co-presented a report entitled "China's Development Challenge."
