Boozman: Language Unifies Nation
U.S. Representative John Boozman (R-AR) today announced his support for declaring English the official language of the United States, cosponsoring H.R. 997, the English Language Unity Act of 2007.
The bill, introduced by Rep. Steve King (R-IA), would not only declare English as the official language of the United States, but establish a uniform English language rule for the naturalization of immigrants. Additionally, the legislation requires that all government functions be conducted in English, with protections provided for documents protecting public health and safety and actions protecting the rights of crime victims and criminal defendants.
"The English language has been the common thread which has bound Americans, no matter where our ancestors came from," Boozman said. "This legislation will, in the long term, help new citizens create a foundation from which they can successfully live the American Dream."
"A language is what unifies a nation, I am proud to support this common-sense legislation which, I hope, will provide a common ground for Americans of all backgrounds," Boozman added.
