Statement of the Hon. Rosa L. DeLauro: UFCW Negotiations Continue with Stop & Shop

Congresswoman Rosa L. DeLauro (Conn.-3) today issued the following statement in response to the ongoing contract negotiations between the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) and Stop & Shop supermarkets. The previous labor contract expired at midnight last night. A possible strike could impact 15,000 grocery workers in Connecticut and a total of 58,000 employees in 365 stores in Connecticut, Rhode Island and Massachusetts.

"We all recognize these negotiations are symbolic of the larger health care debate going on in this country, with the rising cost of health insurance impacting businesses and workers alike. But as we work to address this national challenge, a compromise agreement must be reached here at home so this contract can be renewed.

"I am pleased to hear that even though this contract has expired, both the company and the union will continue to negotiate in good faith and come to an agreement that benefits both sides of this important debate. A strike of this magnitude would impact each one of these workers and the countless New England families that rely on them for the quality service they provide."
