WALZ VOTES TO PUT FEDERAL BUDGET BACK ON THE RIGHT TRACK

Today, the House of Representatives passed a bipartisan continuing resolution (H.J.Res.20) which will allow the federal government to continue to operate despite the fact that last year's Congress never passed 9 of the 11 annual appropriations bills. The failure of the previous Congress to agree on those bills jeopardized federal funding for key Minnesota priorities like veterans and military health care, education, science research, housing, and transportation. Today's continuing resolution adheres to the spending limits in the Republican budget but maintains our commitment to these key programs.

Rep. Tim Walz (MN-01) voted in favor of H.J.Res.20. He said, "Although today's continuing resolution isn't perfect, it represents the first step toward a balanced budget and secures increased funding for Pell grants, medical research, and our highway programs." Overall, the measure funds the government at the Fiscal Year 2006 level, but it adjusts for a cost of living increase for employees, eliminates earmarks, and makes substantial increases in areas of critical national need.

"President Kennedy once said that ‘to govern is to choose' and the new Democratic majority is not shying away from the tough choices that define effective governance. We made a promise to the American people to govern effectively and we intend to keep it."
