Boozman Signs on for Energy Independence

U.S. Representative John Boozman (R-AR) today announced his support and sponsorship of two bipartisan measures which will lead to American energy independence.

Rep. Boozman joined a group of 34 Members backing H.R. 197, a bill to extend the production tax credit (PTC) for renewable energy for five years.

The PTC provides a tax credit for electricity produced from renewable energy facilities including wind, biomass and geothermal.

Since its inception, the PTC has helped the United States create thousands of megawatts of new clean, renewable electricity, resulting in thousands of new jobs and billions of dollars worth of economic activity.

"The needs for alternative and renewable energies are issues of great importance facing Americans, and Arkansans in the 3rd District," Boozman said. "Creating opportunities for researchers to succeed in finding solutions to our energy needs is a role Congress can play in order to address this important challenge."

The second piece of legislation is the H-Prize Act of 2007, establishing a series of prestigious, national prizes to attract the brightest entrepreneurs, scientists, and engineers to hydrogen research.

"Government should set the course, and allow American ingenuity to take the helm toward energy security," Boozman said. "The H-Prize is an innovative means towards innovative end toward new energy sources."

"Both the PTC, and H-Prize Act, will benefit the 3rd District, and Arkansas, directly," Boozman continued. "Today, business and industry leaders, both local and statewide, are working to create renewable energy through biomass and Hydrogen research. This legislation will give an impetus for Arkansans to continue this important work."
