Rogers on FDA Regulation of Tobacco

In 2004, Congress terminated the federal tobacco price support system through a carefully crafted quota compensation package to growers and quota holders. I was proud to help lead this effort with my Kentucky colleagues.

Growers and associated businesses throughout the Commonwealth are still adjusting to a post-tobacco program world. Presently, at least a dozen federal departments and agencies exert control over tobacco. Although I want to keep cigarettes out of the hands of children, expanding the jurisdiction of the FDA at a regulatory cost of tens of millions of dollars a year, would unfairly harm those adjusting tobacco growers throughout Kentucky.

Moreover, attention should be focused on keeping illegal drugs away from youth, as we've seen the unfortunate affects of oxycontin, marijuana, amphetamines, and other drugs in our communities.
