Congressman Mario Diaz-Balart Reacts to State of the Union

Congressman Mario Diaz-Balart (R-FL) today issued the following statement regarding the State of the Union address:

"I am pleased that President Bush presented several new initiatives that will address the issues important to all Americans," said Diaz-Balart.

"President Bush has offered a serious-minded plan to make access to quality health care more affordable. This will lower the number of uninsured Americans and give much needed relief to the middle-class."

"The President is pushing for the development of economically viable alternative forms of energy. The United States needs to continue to explore alternate resources of energy and must reduce its dependency on foreign oil. I share the vision that the United States can be and should be leading the world in this area."

"Iraq is clearly an issue that we must face. I am not happy with the current situation in Iraq and find the status quo completely unacceptable. There should be a general consensus that it is not in our nation's best interest to have terrorists running Iraq. I support the President's new strategy in Iraq as long as the Iraqis fulfill their obligations. The President has heard the concerns of the American people and has agreed that new leadership and new direction in Iraq was needed."

"I am also glad that President Bush took the opportunity to reiterate his support for a free Cuba," concluded Diaz-Balart.
