Dear Friends:

This week, Democrats scored more victories for hard-working American families by fulfilling the remaining two points of their historic Six for '06 agenda that the American people embraced in the recent midterm elections. After the huge strides forward made last week in Congress, Democrats this week passed H.R. 5, legislation that will cut interest rates on subsidized student loans, saving the typical student borrower approximately $4,400 over the life of their loan (H.R. 5 - PDF fact sheet).
The last of the Six for '06 pieces that passed this week was H.R. 6, which will end $13 billion in subsidies for oil companies that are reaping record profits, and instead, invest in clean & renewable energy resources for the future of our nation (H.R. 6 - PDF fact sheet).

Democrats made a pledge to the American people to pass critical legislation within the first 100 Hours of the new Congress, and Democrats delivered with time to spare. In less than two weeks, Democrats have kept their promises to the American people, passed the 100 Hours Agenda and delivered real victories for American families.

The 100 Hours was just the start of Democrats' efforts to put people first in the People's House. Democrats will continue to stand up for hard-working American families and change the way business is done in Washington.

As the President prepares for his State of the Union address next week, Speaker Pelosi and Leader Reid offered their own report on the state of our nation today and demanded the President's address include honest answers to the tough questions facing the nation.

Sincerely,
Congresswoman Betty McCollum
