Dear Dr. Zerhouni:

It has come to my attention, both through media reports and from concerned constituents, that a number of buildings on the NIH campus have asbestos contamination. Some of the reports that I have received have been from maintenance workers who are not required to wear protective gear while working in certain potentially hazardous areas.

I would appreciate your advising me on the actions that the NIH is taking to deal with this issue, including the measures that have been and are being taken to ensure the health and safety of workers who may come into contact with asbestos, the steps that have been taken and are currently underway to remediate the problem, and whether an independent survey of any asbestos contamination in any campus building has been conducted.
