Van Hollen Statement on President Bush's State of the Union Address

United States Representative Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) issued the following statement on President Bush's State of the Union address:

"Tonight, the President outlined a number of important challenges that our nation faces. In fact, he and the Congress, both Republicans and Democrats, have identified these key challenges every year for the past six years. What voters care about, however, is not just identifying the challenges but actually taking action to address them. In that regard, the President's policies have been sorely lacking. The good news is that during the first 100 hours of the new Congress we moved forward on a number of critical issues including ending subsidies for big oil and investing in renewable energy, cutting interest rates on student loans, requiring negotiation for lower prescription drug costs, expanding stem cell research, increasing the minimum wage, and implementing the 9/11 Commission recommendations. We look forward to building on the progress that the House has made and we hope the President will join us in taking specific actions, rather than relying on rhetoric."
