Statement of the Hon. Rosa L. DeLauro

Congresswoman Rosa L. DeLauro (Conn.-3) today issued the following statement on the Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) recommendations for the reauthorization of the Prescription Drug User Fee program. DeLauro is chairwoman of the House Appropriations Agriculture Subcommittee, with jurisdiction and oversight responsibilities of the FDA and its budget.

"I would prefer that FDA were fully funded through appropriations, particularly given the results of survey last year that found that many FDA scientists feel that the agency is beholden to the industry because of its reliance on user fees. Unfortunately, user fees have become an inevitable and necessary part of the process given tight budget constraints. Given the numerous problems the FDA experienced during PDUFA III, I look forward to working with my colleagues in the Congress in developing a proposal that will create an effective drug safety system in PDUFA IV. As Chairwoman of the Agriculture Appropriations Subcommittee, I also look forward to closely monitoring its implementation."
