DeLauro Opposes Any Escalation to the War in Iraq

Congresswoman Rosa L. DeLauro (Conn.-3) today released the following statement in advance of President Bush's address to the nation this evening. The president is expected to announce that he is escalating the War in Iraq by sending additional troops to the region.

"The president's efforts to escalate the Iraq war runs contrary to the recommendations of the bipartisan Iraq Study Group and his own generals in Iraq - perhaps more importantly, they defy the will of the American people, who have spoken clearly on this issue.

"I have opposed this war from the outset, and I have cosponsored legislation opposing an escalation of the Iraq war. The plan proposed by the president tonight is likely to make things worse rather than offer promise of success. I believe we must begin responsibly redeploying our troops out of Iraq starting early this year and completing the job by the next spring, as the Iraq Study Group has proposed.

"Congressional Democrats have offered several proposals to ensure that the president change direction in Iraq , including the one I support. It is clear that the days of Congress rubber-stamping the president's prosecution of this war are over. The Administration needs to join with the Congress to develop a plan to begin - in a responsible way - to redeploy our troops.

"Congress should not allow an escalation of this war, and I will not support it."
