First Female Speaker Nancy Pelosi Swears In Rep. Gwen Moore

Today Congresswoman Gwen Moore participated in a ceremonial swearing-in for the 110th Congress with Speaker Nancy Pelosi. Earlier in the day, Congresswoman Moore had the honor of casting her vote to install Pelosi as the first female Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives.

"Being a woman is a crucial part of my identity—of who I am, what I believe, and how I see the world," said Congresswoman Gwen Moore. "I can't tell you how much it meant to me to see the first female Speaker of the House installed today, both personally and politically."

During the first two days of the legislative session, the new Democratic Majority is implementing ethics reform and rules changes in order to strengthen the standards of civility and fairness in the People's House. Modifications include a ban on gifts from lobbyists and lobbyist funded travel, full disclosure of earmarks, and mandatory annual ethics training for both Members and House employees.

In the following weeks, Democrats will take up several pieces of legislation as part of their First 100 Hours agenda. This ambitious package is an extension of the "Six for ‘06" campaign platform, and will include legislation to implement the 9/11 Commission's recommendations, raise the minimum wage, promote stem cell research, cut interest rates on student loans, lower the cost of prescription drugs, put an end to certain big oil tax subsidies, and invest in renewable fuels.
