Carter Fights U.N. Control Of U.S. Security

CARTER FIGHTS U.N. CONTROL OF U.S. SECURITY

House Conference Secretary John Carter (TX-31) today voted to keep the U.N. from having control over national security for the United States. House Republicans offered a motion to commit that would eliminate a harmful provision in H.R. 1 that would place a critical national security program, the Proliferation Security Initiative (PSI), under the purview of the United Nations. Unfortunately, Democrats defeated this important motion.

"I don't trust the United Nations to keep us safe from international nuclear proliferation efforts. The U.S. is a strong nation that knows what action is needed to keep its homeland secure. It is absurd to think that the U.N. is capable of taking action to halt the production of nuclear and chemical weapons. This is an organization that has an abysmal record in fighting terrorism," Congressman Carter said. "Handing over control of our nuclear security to the U.N. will gut the very program that helped uncover Libya's weapons program."

PSI has been an effective counterproliferation resource, slowing the production of nuclear, chemical and biological weapons technologies. The 9/11 Commission report recognized the PSI as an effective program and suggested it be expanded - the Commission did not, however, recommend placing PSI under the UN or any other multilateral regime.
