Schiff Named to the House Appropriations State and Foreign Operations Subcommittee and the Commerce, Justice and Science Subcommittee

The House Appropriations Committee today conducted its subcommittee selection process, and Representative Adam Schiff was named to serve on the Commerce, Justice, Science Subcommittee and the State, Foreign Operations Subcommittee.

"I am excited about the opportunity to serve on these two significant subcommittees and I am eager to get to work," Schiff said. "Serving on these subcommittees will provide me an excellent opportunity to continue my efforts to make sure America remains a world leader in the advancement of science and technology and to provide needed oversight and direction to our conduct of foreign policy during this challenging time in our nation's history."

The Commerce, Justice, Science Subcommittee budgets most expenditures for the U.S. Department of Commerce, U.S. Department of Justice, and science related agencies such as the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). A major portion of the federal funding for the California Institute of Technology and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory is allocated in the spending bill drafted each year by this Subcommittee.

The State, Foreign Operations, and Related Programs Subcommittee is responsible for funding the U.S. Department of State, foreign military support, and most foreign aid.

In December, Rep. Schiff was selected by Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and the Democratic Steering and Policy Committee to serve on the House Appropriations Committee for the first time in the 110th Congress. The House Appropriations Committee is charged with setting all funding expenditures for the federal government.

The Appropriations Committee is an exclusive committee (members who sit on such committees must give up other committee assignments) and one of the most sought-after in the House. Rep. Schiff made a bid for this committee assignment so he could help ensure adequate oversight of the nation's expenditures and so that Southern California, which plays a vital role in our nation's economy, security, and infrastructure, would have additional representation on the Committee.

In the 109th Congress, Rep. Schiff served on the House International Relations Committee and the House Judiciary Committee. He represents California's 29th Congressional District, which includes the communities of Alhambra, Altadena, Burbank, East Pasadena, East San Gabriel, Glendale, Monterey Park, Pasadena, San Gabriel, South Pasadena and Temple City.
