LUCAS REACTION TO IRAQ PANEL REPORT
U.S. Third District Congressman Frank Lucas made the following statement after reviewing the report released today by the bipartisan Iraq Study Group. The panel released its recommendations on improving the situation in Iraq:
"This commission's report represents a thoughtful, comprehensive review of the serious difficulties in Iraq for U.S. forces and the Iraqi people.
"Like my constituents, I am very concerned about the situation in Iraq, and I will review this report and its prospects for success without political bias. I'd hope that all members of Congress, Republican and Democrat, will put aside their political interests and look at how these recommendations could improve the situation in Iraq and the region.
"I agree with the commission that we should enhance our diplomatic efforts in Iraq and the region. But I also believe that we must also be mindful that past experience has shown Iran and Syria will likely put their own interests ahead of a stable Iraq.
"Benchmarks for the Iraqi government will help the country more quickly assume responsibility for its destiny. The surest way to achieve a stable and free Iraq is for Iraqis to assume full control of their country. We must accelerate the training of Iraqi Army brigades and continue to encourage the development of a democratic Iraqi government.
"The commission also recommends that Congress work over the next five years to restore U.S. military equipment, which has been under heavy use. I agree, and I hope Congress will provide the necessary funds to make improvements to the condition of our military equipment.
"We must make adjustments to our strategy in Iraq, to ensure the success of Democracy there. I think this report represents a positive step to making that happen."
