Turner Announces Federal Trade Adjustment Assistance Eligibility for Needmore Road Delphi Workers
Congressman Michael R. Turner (R-Centerville) was notified today, by the Department of Labor that workers at the Delphi Needmore Road Plant who accepted buyouts would remain eligible for Federal Trade Adjustment Assistance benefits.
Last July, Representative Turner, along with Rep. Tim Ryan (D- Niles) wrote Department of Labor Secretary Elaine Chao requesting her assistance ensuring that Delphi employees would be eligible for Trade Adjustment Assistance benefits.
Representative Turner further advocated specifically for the Dayton Delphi employees in another letter to Secretary Chao asking her to approve the Needmore Road petition for Trade Adjustment Assistance benefits. Congressman Turner sent his second letter after workers at the Needmore Road Plant applied for this assistance in early September, 2006.
Turner said, "It is imperative that the Needmore Road plant employees impacted by Delphi's bankruptcy proceedings have access to the tools they need to return to employment as quickly as possible. Delphi workers have played an important role in the regional economy for decades. The Trade Adjustment Assistance Program will provide funds to retrain these employees. Training will help the former Delphi employees gain necessary skills to help find employment in the new economy."
According to the Department of Labor "All workers of Delphi Corporation, Automotive Holdings Group, Needmore Road/Dayton Plant #3, Dayton, Ohio who became totally or partially separated from employment on or after August 24, 2005, through two years from the date of certification [November 30, 2006] are eligible to apply for adjustment assistance." The decision impacts nearly 2,000 employees.
