Straight Talk With Sam (Happy Holidays)

In my family, the holidays are a special time. My wife, Lesley, spends hours on end hanging wreaths, lights, ribbons, and trimming the tree for our family.

Most of the holiday decorations which adorn our homes during this season are rooted to old traditions. Germans once believed that holly, with its dark green spiky leaves and red berries, had magical powers and the ability to drive demons away. Hanging mistletoe in the doorway to sneak a kiss comes from a loved one comes from an old Norse myth.

The holidays can be full of joyous traditions. And while I hope we can all take pleasure in the little things such as decorating a tree, I ask for everyone to say a prayer for all of our service members overseas and away from their families. Though it is certainly difficult to have them away from home for the holidays, we can be proud of the outstanding job they do everyday. I also want to thank them for their service.
