Pelosi Announces Nominations for Committee Chairs and Steering Committee Appointments
Speaker-designate Nancy Pelosi announced today that the Democratic Steering Committee nominated the Chairs of six House Committees. "These leaders in our Democratic Caucus will spearhead our efforts to increase prosperity and security for all Americans, not just the privileged few," Pelosi said. "As devoted public servants, their years of experience and knowledge will be instrumental as Democrats fulfill our commitment to take our country in a New Direction that addresses the crucial issues facing the American people."
The full Democratic Caucus will vote tomorrow on these nominations and the Chairs of six other standing committees that the Steering Committee will nominate tomorrow:
* Congressman George Miller of California as Chairman of the Education and Workforce Committee
* Congressman Henry Waxman of California as Chairman of the Government Reform Committee
* Congressman Ike Skelton of Missouri as Chairman of the Armed Services Committee
* Congressman Tom Lantos of California as Chairman of the International Relations Committee
* Congressman Collin Peterson of Minnesota as Chairman of the Agriculture Committee
* Congressman Bennie Thompson of Mississippi as Chairman of the Homeland Security Committee.
Pelosi also appointed the members of the Democratic Steering Committee, which is responsible for developing policy for the Democratic Caucus and makes recommendations on appointments and committee assignments for Members.
"House Democrats are determined to take our country in a New Direction that will increase opportunity and prosperity for all Americans, while restoring civility, integrity, and bipartisanship," Pelosi said. "With a diverse membership, including three freshmen for the first time ever, the Steering Committee will provide advice to our Caucus that will be vital to that effort and represent the concerns of all Americans."
The Steering Committee includes members of the elected leadership, the Chief Deputy Whips, and Chairs of the five exclusive committees and the Budget Committee. Other members are:

* Congresswoman Hilda Solis of California, Vice Chair

* Congressman Jerry Costello of Illinois
* Congressman Gene Taylor of Mississippi
* Congresswoman Nydia Velázquez of New York
* Congressman Lloyd Doggett of Texas
* Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez of California
* Congressman Mike Thompson of California
* Congressman Rush Holt of New Jersey
* Congressman Kendrick Meek of Florida
* Congressman Tim Ryan of Ohio
* Congressman Artur Davis of Alabama
* Congressman Dennis Cardoza of California
* Congressman Charlie Melancon of Louisiana
* Congresswoman Doris Matsui of California
* Congresswoman-elect Kirsten Gillibrand of New York
