Boozman Votes to Prevent Pain for Unborn Children

U.S. Representative John Boozman (R-AR) today voted to save unborn children from severe pain, voting for H.R. 6099, the Unborn Child Pain Awareness Act.

The vote was on a motion to suspend the rules of the House and pass the bill, which needs a two-thirds majority to pass. The motion did not pass, the final vote was 250-162.

The bill, of which Boozman is an original co-sponsor, requires abortion providers to inform women requesting an abortion after 20 weeks of pregnancy of the intense pain their unborn child would feel during the procedure of "dilation & extraction," also known as partial-birth abortion. If a woman still decides to have an abortion, she would then sign a consent form indicating that she has received the requisite information and indicating whether or not she has requested anesthesia for the unborn child.

"The unborn child feels pain after 20 weeks," Boozman said. "A neonatal expert practicing in Arkansas says a fetus between 20 and 32 weeks would experience more intense pain than a child or adult who would go through the same type of experience.

"I strongly support the effort to properly inform any mother who requests an abortion of what types of stress the unborn child would undergo," Boozman added. "This is not about emotion, it is about science and common sense, and I am proud to stand with those who voted today for this measure."
