Statement of the Hon. Rosa L. DeLauro
Congresswoman Rosa L. DeLauro (Conn.-3) today issued the following statement on the U.S. Senate confirmation of Dr. Andrew von Eschenbach as commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA.) DeLauro is the ranking member of the House Appropriations Agriculture Subcommittee with jurisdiction and oversight responsibilities of the FDA and its budget. DeLauro is likely to chair the subcommittee in the 110th Congress.
"The FDA operated far too long with an acting commissioner, especially given the critical public health responsibilities of the agency. I congratulate Dr. von Eschenbach on his confirmation as Commissioner and look forward to working with him as he embarks on a very difficult journey to transform FDA's culture. Significant work lies ahead for Dr. von Eschenbach to ensure that science takes precedence over corporate and political interests, and to restore the gold standard for safety that once was associated with the FDA."
