CONGRESSMAN HENRY CUELLAR'S STATEMENT ON IRAQ STUDY GROUP REPORT

Today, U.S. Representative Henry Cuellar made the following statement on the release of the Iraq Study Group's report.

"I agree with the Co-Chairs of the Iraq Study Group when they say, ‘There is no magic formula to solve the problems of Iraq. However, there are actions that can be taken to improve the situation and protect American interests.'

The Iraq Study Group has undertaken a careful and thorough review of the situation in Iraq, and their bipartisan conclusions and findings should be carefully reviewed. One thing is clear, Congress must move forward together to address the increasingly unstable situation in Iraq. I plan to work with my colleagues in Congress and the White House to develop a bipartisan plan that changes the primary mission of U.S. troops from combat to training and support, and end the war as quickly as possible.

I have traveled to Iraq and have met with our forces, and I believe our foremost commitment must be to their safety. I will continue fighting to ensure that our servicemen and women have every tool and resource they need to carry out their duties and return home safely.

It is time we set aside partisan rancor and move forward with a comprehensive plan for handing over responsibility to the Iraqi Government and stabilizing the region."
