Statement From Congressman Bernie Sanders on Global Warming Case Before the U.S. Supreme Court

Congressman Bernie Sanders said, "With scientists around the world in agreement about the devastating consequences of global warming, it is unconscionable that the Bush Administration is attempting to shirk responsibility for regulating carbon dioxide emissions. The Environmental Protection Agency simply cannot fulfill its mission to protect Americans' health and our environment without stepping up and establishing regulations to limit carbon dioxide emissions--one of the main sources of global warming. This is a critical case for Vermont and the entire country and I strongly support this effort to force the Administration to begin to address the problem of global warming.

"Requiring the EPA to regulate carbon dioxide is an important step in the fight to combat global warming but it is not the only effort that we need to undertake. It is critical that Congress also get involved in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and provide clear leadership that will move our nation towards efficient and sustainable energy. As a member of the United States Senate, I plan to help lead this effort by reintroducing, the Global Warming Pollution Reduction Act - a bill introduced this year by Senator Jeffords."
