Pelosi: Democrats Will Restore Fiscal Responsibility to Ensure a Vibrant and Growing Economy

House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today on Speaker Hastert's misleading statement on Democrats' economic agenda:

"Speaker Hastert revealed the true Republican agenda today - continue squeezing middle-income families and college students while continuing to pile mountains of debt on future generations.

"Democrats will restore fiscal responsibility to ensure a vibrant and growing economy. President Bush and the Rubber Stamp Republican Congress have racked up billions of dollars in debt that will translate into higher interest rates for consumers and will threaten our long-term economic growth.

"Democrats are committed to an expanded child tax credit, as well as tax incentives to ensure retirement security and greater access to health care. We will also work to reverse Republican policies that have resulted in millions of families falling prey to the alternative minimum tax. President Bush and the Republican Congress' record on tax policy is clear - tax cuts for multi-millionaires at the expense of the middle class.

"Republican scare tactics and distortions are a sign of their desperation. Democrats are offering a new direction for America to ensure opportunity and prosperity for middle-class families, not just the privileged few."
