Alternative energy bill touted

U.S. Rep. Michael McCaul, R-Austin, joined Austin Mayor Will Wynn and Fritz Steiner, dean of the University of Texas' School of Architecture, at City Hall on Tuesday to plug the alternative energy bill that he authored this year in Congress.

The bill, known as the Alternative Energy Research and Development Act, dedicates $2.25 billion to the research and development of alternative energies such as wind and solar power.

It has passed the House and awaits confirmation by the Senate and President Bush.

McCaul said federal dollars could flow to UT and Austin for research into green building and renewable energy projects.

"We want to train a new generation of architects to make buildings more efficient," he said.

"What's exciting to me about the whole issue is a vision for the U.S. to get more energy independent, to be more self-reliant on technologies not driven by fossil fuels."
