Tax Cuts
Aloha.
When Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes famously said that "taxes are the price we pay for a civilized society," he reminded us not only that we all share the cost of the government functions and programs that provide a foundation for our nation, but also that all of us who live in this country, individuals and businesses alike, have a responsibility to do our part.
Nobody likes to pay taxes, but we meet our obligations. The problem arises when certain segments of our society are relieved of their duty, for no reason beyond their close relationship with our nation's leaders.
The Bush administration's tax cuts for America's super-wealthy send the wrong message to those who recognize and accept their responsibility to support our government and their fellow citizens. The tax cuts tell us that wealth buys access, and that a large bank account earns special treatment from leaders who should be committed to treating all people equally. They implywronglythat we should do more for those with an abundance of wealth than for those who work hard to feed, clothe, and house their families.
President Bush's own father called the theory that slashing the taxes of the wealthy might improve our economy "Voodoo economics." We must accept the reality that cutting the taxes of the richest among us is not sound policy, economically or socially. It is time to reverse these tax cuts and let the super-wealthy meet their obligation to America.
I will carry that message to Washington, join my Democratic colleagues in repealing the Bush tax cuts, and help build a tax policy that supports our working families.
