Message From Mazie 9/11/06
Aloha,
As we remember the tragic loss of life that occurred on September 11, 2001, I am saddened to report that five years later, America is not as safe as it should be. We have had two years to implement the recommendations of the bipartisan 9/11 Commission Report, and are still far from the goals it set out. Our first responders still do not have the ability to communicate with one another during an emergency. We still do not have 100 percent screening of the cargo that comes into our ports.
These are unacceptable conditions. Democrats have laid out a New Direction for America that is based upon a tough, smart plan for real security. We need a real plan for redeploying our troops out of Iraq beginning this year. We need an enforcement-plus plan for addressing illegal immigration. For that matter, we need to reform our legal immigration policies to reunify families. This issue is especially important to our Filipino veterans.
We need real security from enemy attack, and economic, health, and environmental security for American families. We have less than two months to take back Congress - to put America back on the right track and to restore a system of checks and balances so that Congress can play its role and check the excesses of the executive branch. I continue to be grateful for your support, and I ask you to join me in taking time today to remember the brave men and women who lost their lives five years ago.
