Aloha,

As I continue my Neighbor to Neighbor visits with people from all walks of life, one of the recurring concerns I hear is about the state of our education system.

Education is foundational. It is the great equalizer. So improving our public education system is one of our most important long term goals. Our aspirations as individuals and our collective well-being rest on a quality educational system. The No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB), with its overemphasis on testing and labeling of schools as failing is not the answer. The focus should be on improving student learning.

Therefore, when NCLB comes before Congress for reauthorization next year, I will fight for changes that shift the focus to recruiting, training, and retaining qualified teachers. Having a caring, competent, qualified teacher in the classroom is instrumental to student learning. Further, I will support federal funding for programs like Head Start and Pell Grants that expand the availability and affordability of both preschool and college.

Mahalo,
