Second Amendment & Gun Rights
"Coming from a family of hunters and fishers, I believe the Second Amendment must be protected. I will fight legislation that places unnecessary barriers between good citizens and gun ownership. I will be an advocate for conservation and fight legislation that limits the rights of our responsible citizenry."
- Kirsten Gillibrand
* Kirsten Will Be An Advocate For Gun-Owners In Washington:
* Protect The Constitutional Rights Of Citizens To Keep And Bear Arms.
* Support Legislation That Updates Background Check Rules To Expedite The Process. We have the ability for almost instant background checks with today's technological advancement. By updating our rules to be in line with our abilities we can clear up the bureaucratic mess, and expedite transactions.
* Fight For Conservation Measures For Hunters, Fishers And Trappers. Upstate New York has beautiful mountains, rivers and forests. It is important to protect our natural treasures for future generations.
* Champion Gun-Safety Legislation That Does Not Impede The Rights Of Responsible Citizens. Too often gun-safety legislation is simply an obstacle to responsible gun-owners, and does nothing to increase safety. Those who wish to commit criminal acts will obtain arms without complying with such requirements. We do not need laws placing boundaries between responsible citizens and guns, as it does not address the real needs to fight criminals.
* Support An Independent Study Of The Costs And Benefits Of A Universal Ballistic Testing Program. Recently there has been a push by some to use the markings on the bullet and cartridge case (toolmarks) as a way to ballistically "fingerprint" all guns. Considering that there are roughly 65 million handguns in circulation, a mandate to ballistically "fingerprint" would require a de facto registration of guns, and could be used to require that some or all guns be "fingerprinted." In Maryland, the process cost the taxpayers millions, and was seen as so ineffective that the Maryland State Police Forensic Science Division recently called for a scrapping of the program altogether.
* Oppose Government Mandates Regarding Design And Construction Of Firearms. I support efforts for research and development of new designs for gun consumers, but oppose Federal mandates on design and construction.
