Boozman Encourages Passports
U.S. Representative John Boozman (R-AR) today encouraged 3rd District residents who travel to Canada and Mexico to obtain passports before a January 8, 2007, deadline.
Boozman appeared alongside United States Postal Service officials at the Fayetteville Post Office on Dickson Street and at the Fort Smith Post Office on South 74th Street.
On January 8, 2007, all persons, including U.S. citizens, traveling by air between the United States and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda will be required to present a valid passport under the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative.
The current deadline requirement applies only to airline travel. It is expected passports will eventually be required for all other travel, but a firm deadline has yet to be set.
"I encourage all Arkansans to apply for a passport now, instead of waiting for the deadline," Boozman said.
"The need for passports for traveling abroad is, sadly, necessary due to the advent of those who wish us harm," Boozman said. "With the new travel initiative, we can further protect our homeland while welcoming home our citizens and being gracious hosts to our visitors."
Over 70 million U.S. citizens hold valid passports, an estimated quarter of the eligible population. The number of passport applications and issuances continues to grow. In fiscal year 2006, the U.S. Department of State issued over 12.1 million passports.
