GRAVES DISCUSSES ENERGY ISSUES
LIBERTY - U.S. Congressman Sam Graves spoke at the Atchison-Holt Cooperative and United Electric Cooperative dinner tonight. Graves discussed critical energy issues, including the importance of energy independence and alternative fuels with board members, staff and family from Atchison-Holt and United Electric Cooperatives.
"We need to decrease our dependence on foreign oil," said Graves. "The ever-changing price of oil has many consumers feeling the pinch. Higher prices at the pump left Americans with less money in their pocketbook for other expenses."
Graves discussed the importance of the Alaska National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) project, explaining it offers the best hope for increasing the domestic supply of oil. Graves supported the recently passed legislation in the U.S. House of Representatives that would allow ANWR exploration
ANWAR is an area that is roughly the size of South Carolina. New technology means that the U.S. could explore the entire region while leaving a footprint the size of Kansas City International Airport. The reserves in ANWR could increase the domestic supply of oil by as much as 20 percent. Additionally, one forecasting company estimates that 736,000 jobs would result from opening ANWR to exploration.
"As world demand of oil increases, the price of gas will only continue to increase. We need to develop American sources of energy to keep our own economy moving. Depending on foreign sources of oil for our energy needs is not only dangerous, it's expensive," said Graves.
Graves also discussed the importance of new renewable fuels, such as ethanol.
"Right here in Missouri, bio-diesel and ethanol can help solve our energy crisis. It will also help create 8,000 new jobs by adding farmer-owned plants," said Graves.
Graves is a third-term Congressman representing northwest and central Missouri. He is a Deputy Whip, a member of the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure, and the Chairman of the Small Business Sub-Committee on Rural Enterprises, Agriculture and Technology.
