Pelosi Statement on Bob Ney's Guilty Plea

House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today on Republican Congressman Bob Ney's guilty plea this morning:

"Bob Ney's guilty plea today is a tragedy for his family, his constituents, and all Americans, and it is further proof that the Republican culture of corruption has pervaded Congress.

"Speaker Hastert and the Republican leadership have allowed Mr. Ney to remain on the public payroll for a month after his admission of guilt to criminal conspiracy charges. House Republican leaders have a long pattern of protecting Republican members, even when it comes at great cost to the American people.

"Three senior Republicans have already resigned amid scandal in the 109th Congress - Congressman Ney should resign immediately. If the Speaker will not force Congressman Ney to resign, then the House must move to expel him.

"It is long past time for a new direction that restores integrity and civility to the House."
