Pelosi: NLRB Rulings are a ‘Ruthless Attack on American Workers'

House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today on National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) rulings issued this week that could potentially strip more than 8 million Americans of their freedom to choose whether or not to join a labor union:

"The rulings by the Bush National Labor Relations Board are a ruthless attack on American workers. In an economy where wages are down and the incomes of middle-class families have declined for five straight years, the Bush Administration continues to work to undermine hard-working Americans.

"Labor unions are essential to ensuring that workers earn fair wages in appropriate working conditions, and the Bush NLRB has a shameful record of failing to protect these fundamental institutions.

"I support legislation that would remove obstacles that prevent workers from choosing whether or not they want to form or join a union. The Employee Free Choice Act, sponsored by Congressman George Miller of California, has the support of nearly every Democrat in the House of Representatives. But it is strongly opposed by the Republican leadership in the House.

"The Bush economy is making the super-rich richer, and leaving middle-income American families further behind, deeper in debt, and struggling to make ends meet. The recent NLRB rulings are yet another reason that middle-class families need a New Direction for economic security for all Americans."
