Congressman Mario Diaz-Balart Votes for Earmark Reform
Congressman Mario Diaz-Balart (R-FL) today voted to improve transparency in the legislative and appropriations process by helping pass a change to House rules concerning earmarks.
"I have always strongly supported increased transparency and accountability in government," said Diaz-Balart, a cosponsor of the bill and a founding member of the Washington Waste Watchers. "House Republicans once again demonstrated our commitment to responsible government. This rules change will ensure Members of Congress are held accountable for their funding requests and will help eliminate wasteful spending."
The rules changes made by the House will require committees to attach a list of earmarks and their sponsors to each bill under their jurisdiction that comes before the House. Also, when the House and Senate reach agreement on a piece of legislation, a list of any earmarks added to the bill during that negotiation process must be included in the bill before the House votes on it.
