Lucas Reaction to North Korea Nuclear Test

Washington, D.C. - U.S. Third District Congressman Frank Lucas made the following statement in reaction to North Korea's claim that it conducted an underground test of a nuclear weapon:

"North Korea's development of nuclear weapons is an act of aggression against the countries of the Pacific Rim and the world.

"Sadly, this announcement isn't a surprise. North Korea has for 13 years rejected attempts at diplomacy, and it has continued development of nuclear weapons and missiles in the face of overwhelming international condemnation.

"We have known that North Korea was building weapons in defiance of the international community, but this announcement leaves little doubt that they have a working nuclear capability. The world is a more dangerous place with Kim Jong-il in possession of nuclear weapons."
