Press Release - Buchanan Praises House Efforts to Secure the Border; Jennings Opposes Bill to Strengthen Border

Sarasota, Florida - Congressional candidate Vern Buchanan today praised efforts in the House to enact legislation to secure our nation's porous borders and crack down on illegal immigrants. Buchanan's opponent, Christine Jennings opposes a House bill to strengthen the border.

"Our top priority must be national security," said Buchanan. "We can not have national security without border security. We must enact border security now to keep terrorists, illegal gang members, and those who traffic in drugs or human beings out of our country. We also need to deport illegals involved in these activities. And we must respect the rule of law by denying amnesty to illegal immigrants."

In addition to border security, Buchanan has called for tighter port and coastal security. Last week, Jennings issued a press release criticizing the Secure Fence Act, which passed the House with bipartisan support and would secure our borders by building a building a 700 mile fence along the U.S. border with Mexico.

"The voters in Florida's 13th Congressional district have a clear choice when it comes to border security," said Buchanan. "I support efforts to stop the flow of illegal immigration. My liberal opponent would oppose legislation to strengthen our borders."

The House on Wednesday passed the Federal Election Integrity Act to require voters to show proof of citizenship. Today, lawmakers will consider the Community Protection Act, which would make it easier to detain and deport dangerous aliens, the Immigration Law Enhancement Act that aims to crack down on human smugglers, and the Border Tunnel Prevention Act to imprison for up to 20 years anyone who knowingly builds or finances the construction of a tunnel under the border.
